 Malcolm A. Borg
Malcolm A. (Mac) Borg is Chairman of the Board of North Jersey Media Group. He represents the third generation of his family to lead the company that started with ownership of the Bergen Evening Record, now The Record, and New Jersey's award-leading newspaper and flagship of North Jersey Media Group.
His father, Donald G. Borg, was a demanding publisher of Bergen County's up-and-coming newspaper when Mac signed on as an editorial trainee in June 1959 while on summer vacation from college. Mac's been hard at work in Hackensack ever since. He completed an undergraduate degree from Columbia University in 1965 while working full-time at the newspaper, and five years later he attended the Program for Management Development at Harvard Business School.
At one time or another, Mac worked in virtually every department of the newspaper, including selling ads, managing circulation routes, laying out pages, and winning awards as a reporter and editor. His business and newspaper acumen is the force behind the company's growth and success - perhaps first acknowledged in 1968, when Mac was instrumental in creating The Sunday Record. The edition was an immediate success with readers and advertisers, even though, to this day, Bergen County has "Blue Laws" that prohibit most Sunday shopping.
After Donald Borg named Mac president and chief executive of the company in 1971, the day before Mac's 33rd birthday, Mac began to add greatly to the staff, allowing many new managers broad freedom in their operations. He led his management team into the era of computers and full-color offset printing in 1982, putting The Record at the forefront of newspaper production technology in the country. From then on, The Record began to capture many prestigious awards, not just in the newsroom, but also in Advertising, Promotion, Circulation, and Production. The Record is now a regional newspaper with a national reputation.
While some media properties - including both newspapers and television stations - were bought and sold again at Mac's direction over the years, the company that is North Jersey Media Group today is strong and diversified, a tribute to his vision and leadership. Two dailies, 30 weeklies, niche "magazines", on-line publishing, and commercial printing - businesses that capitalize on proven company strengths, strategically clustered in locations over a wide region of northern New Jersey, and are ever poised for expansion.
In addition to growing the company, Mac has been involved with more than 30 civic and charitable organizations, such as the New Jersey Department of Health, comprehensive health planning in northern New Jersey, S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, Palisades Interstate Park Commission, Harvard Business School, and the School of General Studies at Columbia University, to name just a few.
No longer involved in day-to-day newspaper operations, Mac keeps his keen, reporter's eyes on what's going on throughout the company. He's especially known for his institutional knowledge of the company and Bergen County, and for being able "to connect the dots" that others miss.
