    NJPA Editorial & Photography Awards:
  • General Excellence Award to The Record
    This is the state's most prestigious newspaper award. The 2002 award was the second consecutive year and the seventh time in 10 years that the honor has been accorded to The Record.
  • Journalist of the Year - Columnist Mike Kelly of The Record
    This is the state's most prestigious award to a newspaper writer. The 2002 award to Mike Kelly was the fourth consecutive year that the honor has gone to a Record staff writer.

  • 2nd Place to The Record for its 2002 advertising calendar featuring the work of editorial cartoonist Jimmy Margulies
  • 3rd Place to The Record for the Ground Zero Spirit poster and a holiday card featuring the firefighter photo
  • 1st & 2nd place awards to The Record for radio commercials in English and Spanish
New Jersey Deputy Fire Chiefs Association
  • Association Awards to Brian Kladko and Elaine D'Aurizio of The Record for the two-part series, "Safety under Scrutiny." The series examined fire safety issues exposed by the Seton Hall University fire.
New Jersey chapter, International Association of Business Communicators
  • Iris Award for The Record 's design of its mascot, "Scoop," and related children's video tours of the newspaper.
New Jersey Library Association
  • 1st Place Award honoring The Record 's complete body of work on library issues. (The 2002 presentation was the fourth consecutive year The Record has taken first place for Best Series/Body of Work).
  • 1st Place Award to Merry Firschein, The Record, for coverage of library grant problems
  • 1st place Award to Alfred Doblin, Herald News, for Editorial writing on budget cuts
New Jersey Press Photographers Association
  • Three second-place and three third-place awards plus an honorable mention to the Herald News for photos taken by Ryan Mercer, Ellie Markovitch, and Lisa Kyle.

  • Newspaper Innovators in Education Award to The Record 's Newspaper in Education program (The 2002 Award was the second consecutive year for this NAA honor)
Newspaper Association of America Foundation
  • 3rd Place Award for General Excellence to The Record 's Newspaper in Education (NIE) program
New York Achievement in Radio Awards
  • Award to columnist Miguel Perez of The Record as an outstanding Hispanic personality, for his radio program on station WADO.
Northern New Jersey Business Volunteer Council
  • Good Business Award - to The Record in recognition of its response to community needs in the immediate aftermath of the Sept. 11th terrorist attacks - including establishing the North Jersey Media Group Disaster Relief Fund and arranging partnerships with local United Way organizations and the Community Foundation of New Jersey.

Society of American Travel Writers Foundation

The Lowell Thomas Travel Journalism Competition is the most prestigious competition in North America for travel journalism in print and electronic media. There were 1,470 entries in the 2002 competition.
